For anyone with a recent knee injury we can of course help you. But our real specialism is helping people who’ve had knee pain for a long time. Maybe an old injury that has never fully recovered. Or one that came out of nowhere and is now significantly affecting the quality of your life. Perhaps previous physiotherapy treatment hasn’t helped. Or maybe it did for a bit but now the problem is back annoying you more than ever.

This is where our body mind approach to physiotherapy for knee pain comes in. We always start with the body. Is there anything we do need to be concerned about from a structural perspective? The answer for the vast majority of cases is no. Even if you’ve had some kind of scan which has highlighted cartilage wear and tear or other such wear and tear findings we often see people make a full recovery. What we fear is the problem with our knees affects how we hold ourselves and in so doing keeps us in the painful movement pattern. This can happen consciously or subconsciously.

Our first job is to allay your concerns about the state of your knee now and in the future. We do so with compassion and listen intently to all that you need to say. When we listen you normally give us the solutions that we need to reflect back to you. Or put another way, it enables us to address the key mental aspects of the knee pain that we need to address alongside the physical ones.

Once done we use our hands on skills and movement pattern assessment to help you gain confidence in your knees again. Imagine if we asked you to do a movement concentrating on a different, more confident way of doing things and suddenly it made the pain feel easier. Or if we did some hands on work and the pain that you thought was because of a structural problem starts to abate. You start to move with more confidence. We build on this with our between treatment advice and repeat the process until you are completely pain free. A very different, more holisitic, way than traditional physiotherapy approaches to knee pain.

“A few months ago as I began to have problems with my right knee, Brighton Sports Therapy diagnosed a muscle imbalance, and immediately began working on releasing muscles in many parts of my body which had the effect of strengthening the muscles around my knee. I have since completed a 100k non-stop walk and trekked round Iceland with no further problems to my knee. I assure you that if Brighton Sports Therapy are given a body suffering in any way they will have you diagnosed and you WILL leave after the 1st session already aware of improvement” – DP

One of the understandable concerns people have when seeking knee pain physiotherapy is whether it will help. You may be concerned the diagnosis you have is untreatable. For us the diagnosis is mostly unimportant (especially if it’s self-diagnosed from Google!) for the reasons we mention above. What is important is what we can do about it. Diagnoses are frequently just medical labels for groups of conditions. That said we do of course need to ensure we know what we’re dealing with and that is where our experience is important to know when to push you and equally when to hold you back.

Our body mind approach to physiotherapy for knee pain works just as well for people well into later life as it does elite athletes. Our knees are all made of the same stuff! There will of course be a little more wear and tear on them as we age or if we’ve used them a lot in elite sport. This process, we believe, is quite normal and natural and nothing to scared of. What we want to do is make the best of what you have regardless of what is actually happening in the knee or what we fear might be happening in the knee.
